BJP has no say in the J&K coalition Govt | 'Jazya' on holy pilgrimage | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 11: It is now manifestly clear that the BJP, which surrendered everything to Kashmir to "win over" the people there and for power, has no say whatsoever in the coalition Government in Jammu & Kashmir. Of course, the BJP has half a dozen Cabinet Ministers, but they are Ministers just in name. They have no authority and they have no say. It is the writ of the Kashmiri Ministers that runs in the State. Again, while it is true that there are also three, four BJP Ministers of state in the coalition Government, but it is also true that they are good for nothing as their seniors do not share things with them and takes decisions unilaterally and it was none other MoS Finance Pawan Gupta who went public at least twice after September 2 to make his position clear on the issue of imposition of "Jazya tax" on the chopper service between Jammu and holy Shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi and similar other sacred places of the Hindus, including Shri Amarnath Cave Shrine. He said that he was never consulted by PDP leader and Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu before imposing 12.5 per cent service tax on chopper service or on Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage. It is pertinent to mention that Drabu has on occasions more than one declared that he will not withdraw what the Congress and others call "Jazya tax" and also charged the critics of the decision with communalizing the whole issue for petty political gains. He has equated Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage with tourism and said the decision applied to all chopper services in the state. That the BJP, which has an equal number of MLAs with the PDP, has no say in the Government became clear the other day, when state BJP president and MP Jugal Kishore Sharma left Jammu for Delhi to solicit the support of Central leadership so that the coalition Government was persuaded to rollback "Jazya". A report in this regard said: "State BJP president Jugal Kishore Sharma reached New Delhi on Wednesday to apprise the party high command of the imposition of service tax on Vaishno Devi pilgrims travelling to the cave shrine by helicopters. Jugal Kishore will seek intervention of the Central leaders to convince the state Government to withdraw the tax immediately. There was a feeling among the BJP leaders that the service tax issue could turn into a major controversy so the party was making every effort to solve it as early as possible. Now the Central leadership will take up the issue with the coalition partner, PDP, to solve it amicably because some groups are hell-bent on exploiting the issue to again corner the BJP in the Jammu region". The report only suggests that no one in the coalition Government takes the BJP seriously. The report cannot be dismissed as a figment of imagination. Indeed, it is the PDP that is in the driving seat and that has been taking all policy decisions, with the BJP having no option but to dabble into petty politicking, dance to the Kashmiri tunes, obey the PDP's instructions and implanting its decisions and in the process become an object of contempt and ridicule. |
