Hari Om's demand for trifurcation of J&K, bifurcation of Valley rattles Kashmir | Denying the reality | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 11: BJP leader Hari Om's September 9 demand for the trifurcation of Jammu & Kashmir into Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh States and creation of separate homeland within the Valley for the hounded out and persecuted Kashmiri Hindus has rattled the vested interests in Kashmir who consider Jammu region and Ladakh as Kashmir's two colonies and their people no more than slaves whose life is not one of political and economic aspirations. His statement, which was widely published, has evoked a very strong reaction not only from a section of Kashmiri leadership but also from the Kashmiri business community. Their reaction is quite understandable. The division of the State into three States and bifurcation of the Valley would limit the area of activities of the Kashmiri Muslim leadership to a vary small part of Kashmir and defeat their ultimate goal: Separation of the entire State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh from India and its conversion into a theocratic State similar to that of Pakistan that has no place for the non-believers, and even for such Muslim sects as Shiite Muslims. Not only this, the "four-way split" of the State would also adversely impact the Kashmir's economic health. Kashmir has developed at the cost of Jammu region and Ladakh and it has enriched its economy at the cost of Jammu region. Kashmir would turn pauper the moment the State is split into four parts. The nature of reaction the Hari Om's statement has evoked could be gauged from what Kashmir-based CPI-M leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami and a prominent Kashmiri business leader Shakeel Qalandar said on Thursday. Reacting to the statement made by BJP leader Prof Hari Om, CPI (M) senior leader and MLA from Kulgam Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami said that "no power on earth can divide the State on communal lines". (Hari Om had not demanded trifurcation of the State on communal lines. He had sought the State's division on regional lines highlighting the facts that there was nothing that was common between the regions; that the political, economic and social aspirations of the people of Jammu region and Ladakh were never appreciated by the Kashmiri leadership and that the people of these two regions would get entirely submerged under the rising tide of Kashmiri Muslim sub-nationalism if the State was maintained as a single political unit".) "It is sheer frustration on part of BJP and this statement depicts the hidden policies and agenda of Bharatiya Janata Party," Tarigami said, adding that "it is totally absurd on the part of BJP to State that Kashmir should be bifurcated". Kashmiri businessman Shakeel Qalandar was equally critical of Hari Om. He termed his statement as "deplorable and condemnable" and said that "from last two decades this person with dubious character has been spewing venom against the people of Kashmir". "Hari Om should accept that if J&K is divided then India will get divided into pieces. There is 28 per cent Muslim population in Uttar Pradesh and other States have also substantial Muslim population, they will also demand of carving out a separate State for them," he was quoted as saying. Shakeel Qalandar also added that "people of Kashmir have been treating Jammu and Kashmir, including the parts under the control of Pakistan and China as one entity, and from last six decades they have been fighting for their rights that is right to self-determination and not for the division of the State". "To carve out a Hindu State within Kashmir is the idea that can emerge only from the mind of communal BJP leaders," he further said. Earlier on Wednesday in Leh, NC working president and former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had also opposed the demand for the division of the State. He again reiterated his stand at Nubra (Ladakh) on Thursday that the State had to be maintained as one political unit and stated that the NC was a bridge between the regions and that the NC would not allow the state's division on any pretext whatever. However, it was Shakeel Qalandar who vindicated those demanding trifurcation of the state, bifurcation of the Valley, Union Territory status for Ladakh and creation of separate homeland for the internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus by singing the Pakistani song and asserting that the Kashmiri Muslims were fighting for their right to self-determination. He made a fool of himself when he spoke for the nationalist people of Jammu region and Ladakh and displaced Kashmiri Hindus, all bitterly opposed to those in Kashmir who demand self-rule, greater autonomy, Azadi, merger with Pakistan and so on. No one in Jammu and Ladakh and no one in the Kashmiri Hindu community has given power of attorney to the Kashmiri Muslim leadership to take decision on their behalf. Hari Om had rightly said that the people of Jammu and Ladakh and Kashmiri Hindus were masters of their own destiny and no Kashmiri leader could impose his regressive, intolerant and anti-India ideology on them. When will the likes of Omar Abdullah, Tarigami and Qalandar recognize the realities in the state? They must stop speaking for and on behalf of the people of Jammu region and Ladakh and the persecuted social groups like the Kashmiri Hindus. |
