HANDWARA, Sep 11:Two militants and two soldiers were killed in an encounter between militants and security forces in Laribal village of Rajwar area in Handwara thesil of Kupwara district on the intervening night of Sep 10 and 11.
Meanwhile operation continued till last reports came in.
A top police official told early times that, "the encounter egan on the intervening night of Sep 10 and 11 in Laribal forests of Rajwar area in Handwara thesil, after a joint team of army's 21 RR, police and SOG launched an operation following inputs about the presence of four to five militants in the forests of Rajwar. The security forces laid cordon in Laribal forests of Rajwar belt, where on Thursday late night a contact with a group of 4-5 heavily armed militants at night and a fierce gun battle ensued which continued intermittently through the whole night, official added.
The official said that the militants were asked to surrender but they opened fire, after which the troops retaliated and an encounter started. Reinforcements have been rushed to the spot to augment the strength of the security forces to hunt down the hiding militants in the upper forests, the official added.
Early times have learnt from sources that the two army soldiers of 21 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) sustained injuries who later succumbed due to their injuries have been identified as Desh Panday and Chitra Sahaie.
The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police north Kashmir range Garib Dass said that a joint team of Handwara Police, Army and SOG had laid a trap on Thursday night and they challenged the militants, triggering an encounter. Two soldiers of 21 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and two militants were killed in a gun battle.
However he said, the body of the killed militants have not been recovered yet, while adding he said that it was not immediately known whether this was an infiltration bid or not. The details will be known once the operation concludes, and as of now the search operation is underway.
"Huge quantity of arms, ammunition and other war like stores has been recovered including two AK-47 Rifles, two pistols and one UBGL with eight grenades from the procession of killed militants, said official.
The search operation is on as more militants are believed to be hiding in the area, official added.
