Baglihar Power Project Phase-II to be commissioned soon

Banihal, Sept 11: The ongoing work of Phase-II of Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project (BHPP) situated on river Chenab in Chanderkote of district Ramban is expedited and it is expected that it will be commissioned in coming month.
Sources within the department said that unit 4th i.e. fourth turbine of 150 MW is starting its production some ten days back while fifth turbine or unit 5th is under trial i.e. on unloading bases and the work on 6th one is on and is expected to start in next couple of months. Though it missed it deadline as earlier this year authorities were hopeful of commissioning of project by September 2015 but now it will take few months for its due commissioning
If we may recall here that BHPP Phase I was commissioned in year 2008 and the works for construction of phase two starts in the year 2012 and is to be commissioned after August 2015.
Sources within the JKPDC said early times that for the inauguration of the Phase II -BHPP is scheduled in the first week of October however the final date of the inauguration was still not finalized and there is also the chance of Postponement of inauguration. Source said that the Prime minister of India Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Ramban and dedicate the Power projects people and state and nation. However sources said there is chance of postponement of its inaugural ceremony due to some unknown reasons. Technically the Baghlihar Hydro Electric Project is based on two phases comprising 450 MW's each with six turbines of 150 MW. The first phase comprising on 3 turbines each of 150 MW total 450 MW was already in running conditions and the production of this first phase was started in 2008. In Phase-II the 4th unit of 150 MW will start its production and the 5th turbine of the project is under trial while the work on 6th unit is on. The JP Associates Construction Company engaged for the construction of the project started its housekeeping and cleaning works in the project premises however sources said that the inauguration date is yet to be finalised.
