Labourers’ strike hits work at Qazigund-Banihal tunnel | DC Anantnag's mediation fails | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Report
Anantnag, Sept 11: The work on the prestigious Qazigund-Banihal tunnel has slowed down for the last one month due to the strike of local laborers who have been employed for the construction by the Navyuga Engineering Company. The laborers are on strike since last one month over disparity in wages. The local labourers get less wages as compared to those from outside the state. Various trade unions including Centre of Indian Trade Unions Jammu Kashmir has already announced support to the strike call of protesting employees. On Thursday, CPIM State General Secretary Mohd Yousf Tarigami visited the protesting labourers and took part in the protest rally as well. Earlier labourers have held forceful protests demonstrations against the construction company for denying them their genuine rights including allowances. Today, labourers held hour's long meet with the management of the construction company at DC office Anantnag. Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Muneer-ul-Islam who chaired the meet for negotiations, however failed to yield any positive result. "During first round DC Anantnag heard us patiently and termed our demands including that of making a union according to labour law genuine but during second round of the meeting after having secret meet with the management of the construction company, DC Shab aksed to sign the agreement whose first point was that we can't making a union," Ghulam Nabi, president of the labourers told Early Times. He said that they will continue to protest till company fulfills their genuine demands. "Our wages are lesser than that of the labourers in comparison with those from outside of the state while as we are being devoid of basic facilities including medical allowances," he said. He said that they posses right of making a labourers union according the law but ironically management of the construction company is not allowing us. "We are demanding review of our wages as we are receiving too less and others allowances as well. We are demanding that the company should abide by all labour laws which the company is currently not abiding," they said. DC Anantnag, Muneer-ul-Islam on being contacted refuted the allegations and said that management of the company agreed to accept all the demands. "No it's not the fact, company accepted all most all the points including making of a representative body but it seems some people behind the wall are misleading the labourers ," he said. He said that negotiations are still going on and hopefully it will yield positive results As per reports the work on Qazigund-Banihal tunnel has received major setback due to the strike of labourers . Pertinently, after missing several deadlines in the past the construction of the tunnel undertaken by National Highway Authority of India (NHIA) is scheduled to be completed with a deadline of May 2016 in place. The Minister for Roads and Buildings (R&B), Altaf Bukhari, had recently expressed concern over the slow progress of work on the tunnel. The Minister had directed the executing agency Navyuga Engineering Company to speed up the pace of work to ensure timely completion of the project. Official sources said that 50 per cent of work has been completed on the tunnel on both sides. |
