Woman sets herself ablaze on Eid in Srinagar | | | Muhammad Mukaram Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 28: A young woman set herself ablaze on Eid in downtown Srinagar after alleged harassment by her in-laws over dowry, prompting police to arrest her husband, two sisters-in-law and mother-in-law. The 34-year-old Mahjabeen, wife of Rafiq Ahmed Sofi, set herself ablaze at her home in Kaw Mohalla area of Khanyar. Her neighbours rushed her to the SMHS Hospital where she succumbed to injuries, said a senior police official. He said a police team rushed to the spot and found that the woman had sustained 90 percent injuries. On way to the hospital, the official said the woman told her neighbours that her in-laws used to harass her regularly. Police later arrested her husband, two sisters-in-law and the mother-in-law. According to some local residents, after her marriage Mahjabeen became a victim of domestic violence and faced extreme torture at the hands of her in-laws. An FIR vide no. 63/2015 under sections 306, 309, 498A has been registered against the accused and investigations are on, the official added. He said body of the woman was handed over to her parents after legal formalities were completed. Notably, cases of domestic violence against women are on rise in J&K, and sociologists mainly attribute it dowry demands. "Unless you don't do away with dowry, domestic violence would increase in the state," said Saleem Jahangir, a sociologist. Official figures reveal that 3,192 cases of crime against women were registered in the state last year. They included 1,340 instances of sexual violence and 332 cases of rape. Cruelty by husband too is not uncommon in the state with 456 cases reported during 2014. Four dowry-related deaths also took place the previous year. |
