Sept 29, 1947: SM Abdullah tenders apology to Hari Singh | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 28: Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah launched the Quit Kashmir Movement in 1946, was arrested and put on trial. However, Indian leaders including Gandhi and Nehru visited Kashmir weeks before the partition of the Indian sub-continent to seek his release. Maharaja finally agreed to release him but sought a letter of apology which was readily given. The caged Sheikh tendered the apology letter on September 26 and after three days he was released. The concluding para of the apology letter reads: "Before I close this letter I beg to assure your Highness once again of my steadfast loyalty and pray that God under your Highness' aegis bring such an era of peace, prosperity and good government that it may be second to none and be an ideal for others to copy." This letter has been published in Sardar Patel papers. Earlier, Hari Singh summoned Sheikh Abdullah to his Palace on the request of Indian leaders. He gifted a few gold coins to Hari Singh as a goodwill gesture. Immediately after his release he addressed the people in the erstwhile Hazuri Bagh (now Iqbal Park) only to feed lies to them. After criticizing Pakistan, he said: "I do not know why I was arrested and why I have been released now." |
