Congress in fix over beef resolution in Assembly | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 28: After ruling PDP and its alliance partner BJP, the Beef controversy has now posed a big question mark on the Congress stand in forthcoming Assembly session where the main opposition National Conference is going to move a resolution for lifting ban on cow slaughtering and sale of beef in Jammu and Kashmir State. According to the sources in Congress circles, the issue has created a division within the party, which is not finding it easy to have a clear stand on the Beef Ban in J&K. While the senior party leaders, particularly from Jammu region, are in favour of avoiding the controversy in view of the religious sentiments attached with the issue, a few Congress MLAs are advocating for abolition of the Law against cow slaughtering in J&K, sources said. Pertinent to mention here that none of the Congress MLA belongs to the minority community in J&K as the party had suffered a humiliating defeat in Jammu region during the last Assembly elections. Ever since the controversy over beef ban implementation erupted following a High Court order on September 9, the senior Congress leaders have been avoiding to take a clear stand in favour or against the ban. As all speculations of Government collapse on the issue turned out to be wrong and the ruling PDP and its alliance partner BJP seem to have managed survival of their coalition by Hook or by Crook, all eyes are now set on the forthcoming Assembly session. Even as the Speaker has yet to take a decision on the NC resolution for accepting or rejecting the same, sources said that Congress is equally worried over the issue like the ruling coalition partners. Notwthstanding the majority Congress MLAs from Kashmir, the Congress is well aware of the fact that Hindu dominated Jammu is going to be its stronghold once again, sources said while explaining the party's dilemma. |
