'He had banned SMS’, News channels and internet' | Can Omar comment on internet ban? | | Peerzada Ummer
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 28: Former Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah's criticism of Internet ban on Eidul Azha has evoked ridicule from various quarters. Accusing Omar of gagging news channels, withdrawing SMS’ and slowing down the internet time and again, these quarters have said that Omar cannot comment on the Internet ban. The Government imposed a ban on internet for three days following trouble on Eid-ul-Azha. Known for his tweets more than his work as a chief minister, Omar maintained that image too while being out of power. As the services were restored, the NC working president took to twitter, saying, "The irony of listening to Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi lecturing about connected digital India while we are totally disconnected." "The PDP-BJP regime is pushing people of the State to the wall," he said. Omar said CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was living up to his promise of making the State like Gujarat. "He had promised to make the state like Gujarat. Now, I guess, we are competing with Gujarat as to who bans the internet more," tweeted Omar. As Omar's criticism to the present regime found no coverage in press, people across the state wonder how could the person like Omar Abdullah, during whose regime, the internet ban was the order of the day, becomes the brand ambassador of internet freedom. What is more ironic is that during the six year rule of NC- Congress regime in Jammu and Kashmir led by Omar Abdullah, not only the internet became the causality but also the SMS’ were banned for years together. "Omar used to find a reason to gag internet, voice calls and SMS’ when he was the Chief Minister. How could he present himself as an advocate of the free speech?," said one netizen. The social media also remained abuzz on Monday with the people commenting over Omar's criticism on Internet ban. "Didn't Omar even snapped news channels for days all together and how could the person like him think of even getting peoples' sympathy over the bizarre tweets," said Khalid Nazir, a college student. Pertinently the Internet services were snapped in the State at 5 am on Friday as the police apprehended misuse by anti-social elements. The ban was to remain effective till 10 pm on Saturday. However, it was extended first till 2 pm on Sunday and then till 8 pm on Sunday in case of landline broadband and 10 am on Monday in case of mobile Internet. The step by the authorities was aimed at thwarting the designs of elements who may violate the court order and, as a mark of protest, post the pictures or videos on social media that may spark communal tension. |
