City of temples wears dirty look despite 'Clean Jammu Abhiyaan' | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 28: The ongoing 'Clean Jammu Abhiyan' may have entered into its third day on Monday, but on ground the city continues to wear a dirty look. Barring few posh areas in the winter capital, by and large the city continues to struggle to deal with the heaps of garbage and its proper disposal. Absence of ground staff and lack of infrastructure support available with the Jammu Municipal Corporation poses a great challenge to the authorities to maintain the clean environs. On Monday, JMC under the banner of 'Clean Jammu Abhiyan' conducted a drive against the use of polythene carry bags in Meshapura Chowk, Resham Ghar Colony, Bakshi Nagar, New Plot, Rehari Chungi but failed to check the sale of the banned material across various outlets in the main city markets. During the drive the team inspected various shops and other outlets and seized polythene carry bags and charged Rs 7,000 as compounding fee from the defaulters on spot. The team also made the public aware of the ban on the use of polythene carry bags and its adverse effects and requested them to use bags made of bio-degradable material. To spread awareness among the common masses a rally comprising students from Government Girls Higher Secondary School Rehari Colony, Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Sarwal, Government Higher Secondary School Paloura, Raina Higher Secondary School Paloura, Naveen Vidya Mandir School and volunteers of Sulabh International was flagged off by Shamsher Singh Manhas, Member Parliament, Sat Pal Sharma, MLA Jammu West and Mandeep Kaur, Commissioner, JMC. The rally started from Paloura Chowk near Higher Secondary School and the students raised slogans in favour of keeping the environment clean and urged the people not to throw the waste in open and use the dustbins for proper disposal of waste material. The rally culminated at Loran Park Paloura, Jammu where a colourful cultural programme was organized. MP Shamsher Singh Manhas and BJP MLA (Jammu West) Sat Pal Sharma were the dignitaries present on the occasion alongwith other prominent citizens. An oath was administered for cleanliness, wherein it was pledged by all to keep the environment neat and clean and to spare 100 hours every year to dedicate himself/herself for doing the cleanliness and hoped that this step would lead to make India clean. Plays were also staged by the students of Delhi Public School and by artists of Abha Theater Group by giving message to the society regarding the importance of cleanliness. In the park the saplings provided by Department of Ecology and Remote Sensing were planted by the Students and JMC Commissioner.
