MLA Amira Kadal asks corporation officials not to seek permission for construction | Political interference takes toll on functioning of SMC | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Sept 30: Political interference in the functioning of a civic body like Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has taken toll with illegal constructions going on in a posh area located a stone's throw away from the city centre. Sources told Early Times that constructions without the necessary permission are going on unabated in the Jawahar Nagar area of the summer capital of the state. The work has already been completed on some of the structures and it is going on at a full speed on rest of the structures. It has been learnt that MLA Amira Kadal, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari has passed on directions to the officials of SMC not to ask for permission from the people carrying out constructions in the Jawahar Nagar area. As such the field is open for the 'violators' to trample over the guidelines and carry out the construction according to their own will. "Standing instructions have been issued to the higher ups as well as local staff of SMC not to interfere in the constructions of shopping malls, shops and houses in the Jawahar Nagar area. As such no official of SMC dares to seek permission from the people carrying out construction and there is total anarchy in the area," said sources. Sources said that construction work has already been completed on nine illegal shopping complexes/malls while as work is going on at least three other similar structures. They said that many illegal shops have also been constructed in the Jawahar Nagar right from the Gurdwara Chowk to the bund of flood channel. "One of the illegal shopping complexes was inaugurated by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) minister who turned out to be one of the giant killers in the last year's assembly elections. The constructions in the area are being regularly monitored by the local legislator and he ensures that there is no impediment in the whole process," said sources. Sources said that a police party visited the Jawahar Nagar area on September 16 and asked the people carrying out the construction to make the main road free from the construction material. Nobody from the police party asked for the permission for the constructions going on in the area and it seemed that the match is 'fixed'. "Former Municipal Commissioner, Tufail Matoo became the casualty as he stood against the diktats of the local legislator and wanted the people to get permission before starting the construction work. He was shown the door for showing resentment despite the fact that he was posted as SMC Commissioner in March this year only. The local legislator wants the officials to fall in line or face music," said sources. Sources said the people who had shops in the area have multiplied the number of shops without any permission whatsoever. They said that three shops located opposite to the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) near the Gurdwara have been turned into six shops with the same happening under the nose of concerned officials. Despite repeated attempts SMC Commissioner, Showkat Ahmad Zargar could not be contacted as he did not pick up his mobile phone. However, some time back he had claimed that SMC had carried out demolition drive in the Jawahar Nagar area. |
