Congress to oppose bills seeking revocation of ban on cow slaughter | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 30: Convinced that any move to revoke ban on cow killing and eating of beef in the state would provoke communal tensions across the country, the Congress has, according to top sources in the party, decided to oppose tooth and nail bill or bills seeking revocation of the 1932 laws as contained in the Ranbir Penal Code concerning cow killing and beef eating. "The Congress will not allow the adoption of any bill that could escalate communal tensions in the country. We are a national party. We cannot be a party to any move that tears apart the country's social fabric. Jammu & Kashmir is a communally sensitive State. If any bill seeking revocation of ban on cow killing and beef eating in the State is adopted, it would not only lead to the disintegration of the State but would also result in communal tensions across the country," a top source in the Congress said, adding that "the decision to oppose such controversial and divisive bills has been taken at the highest level". It is a significant development considering the fact that the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party Nawang Rigzin Jora had announced two weeks ago that his party will support the bill seeking repeal of those laws which ban cow killing and consumption of beef. He had made this provocative statement after the Kashmiri Muslim leadership, including religious leadership, asked the people to violate the High Court direction that ban on cow killing and beef eating must be enforced and those who violated the law must be brought to justice. The High Court had on September 9 upheld the validity of all the laws concerning cow killing and beef eating. It is pertinent to mention here that the National Conference and CPI-M, besides a Kashmir-based independent MLA, have moved the Speaker's office and sought repeal of all the laws concerning cow killing and beef eating. That the Congress has decided to oppose all such moves constitutes an important development in the troubled-state. It should open the eyes of the BJP and the RSS, which, according to reliable sources, have decided to go with the PDP if it decides to support the move of the NC, the CPI-M and so on and so forth. |
