3 illegal saw mills seized in Kathua after ET report | | | Akshay Azad Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 2: The Forest Department has woken up from slumber and seized three illegal saw mills in Jastora forest range, a fortnight after Early Times carried a report the issue. In its September 12 edition, this newspaper had reported that more than a dozen saw mills were operating illegally in district Kathua. Acting on the report, sources said a joint team of Forest Department and Forest Protection Force (FPF) carried out a raid in Jasotra range and seized three saw mills running illegally. The team comprised District Forest Officer Ashwani Kumar, Deputy Director Forest Protection Force and field staff. The sealed saw mills were located in Ladwal and Chapaki area of Hirnagar under Jasrota forest range and were running in violation of SRO 103, Section 6 of J&K Forest Act. DFO Kathua, Ashwani Kumar said that on Thursday, the team had visited several saw mills and three were sealed which were found running illegally. He said that though a meeting was also conducted with the Deputy Commissioner Kathua regarding the issue no concrete decision came out. He said that it was "just beginning and action would be taken against remaining illegal saw mill owners." As Early Times had reported in its earlier story, more than one dozen sawmills were running illegally in Kathua and the Forest Department had turned a blind eye towards the issue. |
