Now, BJP plans to hoodwink Ladakhis | Leh council elections | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 2: State BJP general secretary (organization) Ashok Koul, who should normally remain busy with organizational activities, on Thursday took an extraordinary step by releasing the party's manifesto for the October 17 Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, elections at Leh. He released what he called "nine-point agenda", which, among other things, talked about the long-standing demand of the people of Ladakh for Union Territory status. Releasing the agenda, Ashok Koul, who, according to insiders, "wanted to become Deputy Chief Minister", said that the "nine-point agenda includes to streamline development plans and the planning process in the district and re-visit Ladakh 2025 drafted in 2002". He also declared that the BJP was committed to pursuing fulfillment of long-standing demands of the People of Ladakh region, which include granting of UT Status to Ladakh, opening pilgrimage route to Kailash Manasarover via Demjok, declaration of Ladakh as Scheduled-6 areas, inclusion of Bhoti language in 8th Scheduled of the Constitution, grant of the deemed university status to CIBS, Central University/Medical College in Ladakh, strengthen relationship between Leh and Kargil, renew efforts on upholding the rich culture heritage of the region and promotion in tourism industry". It is clear that the BJP, which earlier let down the people of Jammu province by sacrificing their interests in order to come into power in the state, has now planned to hoodwink and mislead the people of Ladakh to dislodge the Congress from the LAHDC, Leh, and capture it by holding out promises which it just can't fulfill. At present, the BJP has four members in the 30-member council, whereas the Congress has 21. The BJP is not running a single-party government in the state. It is part of the coalition government, which is headed by Mufti Sayeed of the PDP, which, like other Kashmir-based outfits, "mainstream" or otherwise included, is vehemently opposed to the UT demand being raised by the people of Ladakh. But more than that, there is an agenda of alliance that governs the relationship between the PDP and the BJP and also defines the issues which the coalition government shall try to address. The 9-point manifesto the BJP released at Leh cannot be given an effect to because the agenda of alliance nowhere refers to any of the nine points. In fact, Ladakh and Ladakhi issues are conspicuous by their absence in the agenda of alliance. There are only two vague passing references to Ladakh in the otherwise lengthy agenda of alliance. It only says that the PDP-BJP coalition would "develop, preserve and promote the Dogra heritage and Ladakh's Hemis festisal" and "preserve identified water bodies in Jammu, Srinagar and Ladakh". That's it. You may put in any amount of effort to find if the agenda of alliance contains any other reference to Ladakh, you would come out of the exercise minus everything. The fact is that the BJP has held out false commitments to win the Leh election. The people of Ladakh are politically very mature. They are unlikely to walk into the BJP trap. Besides, the Congress is very much there to call the BJP's bluff by presenting a true picture of facts before the Ladakhi electorate. |
