Rajouri: Bandh call withdrawn after DIG's intervention | | | Early Times Report
Rajouri, Oct 6: After intervention of a top police officer, members of the majority community in Rajouri agreed on Tuesday to withdraw their protest demonstration and bandh call from Wednesday. The agitated people had given two-days time to police to arrest those involved in manhandling a cop and his wife after labeling them as bovine smugglers on September 26. On Tuesday, some prominent citizens had a three-hour meeting with DIG Rajouri-Poonch range AK Attri after which they decided to withdraw the bandh call. A prominent political leader and one of the members of the committee leading the protest demonstrations expressed his and the community's satisfaction over the police action against the accused. The police arrested two people on Monday and said they will soon arrest the other accused involved in the manhandling of the cop and his wife. After police failure to arrest the accused, the majority community had held protest demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday last and had observed 'civil curfew' which was withdrawn for two days till Tuesday. Reliable sources said that among other demands the majority community members were also demanding transfer of Station House Officer of Rajouri police station. "Majority community members have agreed to withdraw their agitation after a meeting with the DIG. As far as the transfer of the SHO was concerned, he may be among other 6-8 SHOs whose transfers were on the cards" said SSP Rajouri Dr Haseeb Mughal. After the announcement about withdrawing bandh call, a meeting by the members of minority community was held at Jawahar Nagar and it was decided to close the business establishments and block Jammu-Poonch highway if the two arrested persons from their community were not released efore 11 am on Wednesday. |
