Qadyanis plan seminar in Srinagar, MMU objects | 'We advise admin not to play with fire' | | Early Times Report srinagar, Oct 6: Qadyanis planning to hold a seminar at SKICC here is all set to snowball into a major controversy. Sources told Early Times a group of Qadyanis, who claim to be another sect of Muslims, have approached the district administration in Srinagar to seek permission for holding a seminar at SKICC on October 10. "The administration is in a tight spot and is indecisive about whether to allow them to hold a seminar or not as major religious groups in Kashmir don't recognize them as Muslims," said a source. He said soon after the Qadyanis approached the administration to seek the permission for the seminar, the Muttaheda-Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), a conglomerate of various religious groups led by the moderate Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, too approached the district administration to seek permission for holding a seminar on the same day at the same venue thus complicating the situation further. Sources said that MMU has requested the district administration not to grant permission to Qadaynis to hold the seminar as it would arouse passions and disturb the region's environment of religious tolerance. A religious cleric said: "Qadyanis are not a sect of Islam they are known to deny that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) as the last Prophet, and thus are not considered to be Muslims or following the tenants of Islam." He said that administration should understand that this group has no following in Kashmir and if they are allowed to carry on with their activities in the Valley it can trigger a major row and lead to disturbance. "As far as Qadyanis are concerned we have made it clear to them that they should stop claiming that they are Muslims. If they want to preach some other religion we have no objection," the cleric added. He said administration should understand that if Qadyanis are allowed to hold a seminar in Kashmir it can have far reaching consequences. "We advise the government to refrain from playing with fire," the cleric added. Sources said that if Qadyanis go ahead with their proposed seminar at SKICC on Saturday they can face strong resistance and it can lead to law and order problems. A top official while talking to Early Times said: "Qadayanis and MMU have approached us to seek the permission for a seminar on the same day at the same venue. We will look into all the aspects before taking a final decision. If we feel that Qadyani seminar can create a law and order problem we will not allow them to go ahead. As far as MMU is concerned it's an influential group we cannot take them lightly." |
