'Local youth being lured into militancy in Kashmir' | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 6 : During the months of August and September more than 20 to 25 youth have been recruited in a couple of militant outfits in the Kashmir valley and 30 to 50 militants have infiltrated into the valley in the same period, according to latest inputs from intelligence agencies. These agencies have attributed the recent major encounters between the security forces and militants to increase in the man power of militants. These local youths have joined militancy in Kashmir in the last couple of months, as violence continues to flare up in the Valley. Four soldiers and three militants have been killed in the Valley in three different gunfights in the last 48 hours. Officials said the rising violence is reflective of the continuing draw of militancy among youth and tension building up between India and Pakistan in recent months. Official sources said violence would continue at this pace for some more time, given the spurt in local militancy, and the possibility of infiltration attempts before winter snow cuts off higher reaches of the Line of Control. One senior official said it was still not clear whether the latest round of violence was because of infiltration by militants. The Army has not yet reported any infiltration but intelligence agencies and the state police confirm that some ingress bids were carried out successful despite the fact that a number of infiltration bids were foiled by the alert troops. In contrast, local youths have been joining militant ranks in significant numbers. There are definite reports to show some local youths have taken to militancy in the August-September months. This takes the confirmed number of local youths who have joined militancy this year to over 100. Along-with increase in the man power what worries the security agencies is the moral and material support these militants receive from the Army and other official agencies in Pakistan and Occupied Kashmir which has helped militants in remaining in the possession of highly sophisticated weapons and high grade explosives. It is in this context that the Army and the paramilitary forces besides the police have been put on high alert to foil machinations by these militants. |
