No downgrading of security grid in J&K | | | If the recent incidents of major encounters between the militants and the security forces are any guide possibilities for withdrawal of troops from within the Kashmir valley seem to be remote. These incidents also reflected Pakistan Army's and other non-state actors' plan to push groups of militants into Jammu and Kashmir for giving a fillip to the level of violence. One such report from the farflung area of Kupwara also indicates that groups of militants have sneaked into the Kashmir valley from across the LOC and have begun carving out hideouts for their shelter. But despite scare having been created among people in the valley there are a number of civilians who have volunteered information about the presence of militants, who are equipped with sophisticated weapons. In a couple of such encounters Army has lost four soldiers. Four Army men were killed during an overnight gunfight in the forest of Hafruda in frontier Kupwara district of north Kashmir. The gunfight broke out on Sunday.A massive search operation was launched by the Army and police on Sunday afternoon after an input that militants were hiding in the area. Meanwhile, in an another incident, an unidentified militant was killed in an ongoing firefight in north Kashmir's frontier Kupwara district. The Army said a search operation was launched in Krusun Lolab area, over 120 kms from Srinagar on a tip off about presence of militants in the area. The contact with the militants was established mid night and in the firefight one militant has been killed. Arms and ammunition were recovered from the area.In another incident two militants of Jaish-e-Mohammad, including its top most commander in Kashmir Adil Pathan, were killed in a gunfight in south Kashmir.Police claim that killing of Pathan and his associate was is a blow to Jaish's overall presence in south Kashmir. In the light of these incidents and the plan to assist groups of militants in crossing into Jammu and Kashmir it may not be possible and feasible for the Ministry of Defence to withdraw troops from within the state, not to talk about demilitarization of Jammu and Kashmir as has been demanded by Pakistan Prime Minister,Nawaz Sharif during his address to the UN general Assembly in New York. Senior Army and police functionaries believe that it is time for further upgrading and strengthening the security grid within Jammu and Kashmir and on the LOC and the IB.In addition to this security grid was being strengthened in the neighbouring Punjab state where groups of militants, brought on the launch pads across the border, were waiting for an opportunity to cross into Punjab.Once terrorists sneaked into Punjab it could further derail peace and stability in Jammu nd Kashmir. It is in this context that the Army were experimenting with the installation of remote-controlled guns on the LOC and on the IB not only in Punjab but in Jammu and Kashmir also. This step was being initiated to foil infiltration bids from across the border.some of the sub machine guns operated by remote control were being tested in the Akhnoor sector of Jammu which is also prone to ingress bids..These guns will shield the soldiers against sniper attacks by Pakistan forces during their patrolling on the border. These guns will help the soldiers in infiltration detection. This way the Army authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have not been swayed by Pakistan's repeated announcements on its desire for promoting cordial ties with India through the process of dialogue. The Army in Pakistan is not willing to stop needling India by exporting terror and that has been the reason for Islamabad to feel offended when India talked about the need for abandoning export of terror for a purposeful dialogue. |
