Tobacco control workshop held | | | Early times Report
Udhampur, Oct 13: A workshop, in connection with Anti Tobacco Campaign in J&K, was organized at Udhampur Degree College Udhampur. District Development Commissioner was the Chief Guest and Dr. Chander Parkash Chief Medical Officer Udhampur presided over the function. Rakesh Jamwal Joint Director, Chief Planning Officer Udhampur was the guest of honour. Dr. NC Prabhakar Resource Person for International Union Against TB and Liaison Officer for Voluntary Health Association revealed during one day workshop that India is at No. 3 in the production of Tobacco products and 2nd as Consumer in Tobacco products in whole of the world. Jammu and Kashmir has high incidence of smoking and J&K is also becoming the Lung Cancer Capital of India due to increased smoking prevalence across all the section of the society. 26.6% population in Jammu & Kashmir uses tobacco products in one or the other form. 3.8% population in J&K smokes bidis while 8% use smokeless tobacco products. Cigarette use prevalence in J&K is 12 percent, almost double the nationwide prevalence of 5.7 percent. The highest proportion of adults (67.9 percent) exposed to tobacco smoke in offices is in J&K and the lowest (15.4 percent) in Chandigarh. The chief guest stressed the need for the implementation of COTPA in all respect. The Chief Medical officer explains the steps taken by the department regarding Tobacco Control Programme. The workshop was organized as a part of Anti Tobacco Campaign launched by the Govt. of J&K in collaboration with Dr. N. C. Prabhakar Resource Person for the International Union against T. B. and Liaison Officer for Voluntary Health Association. |
