Police counter Hizb propaganda on social media | Get indoctrinated youth back to mainstream | | Early Times Reoprt Srinagar, Oct 13: The police have started to counter Hizbul Mujahideen propaganda aimed at indoctrination of youth on the social media. And, as per claims the police have succeeded in bringingback some of the `indoctrinated' youth to the mainstream. Sources said in the wake of rise in incidents of youth taking to arms, the Jammu and Kashmir Police has intensified its online surveillance by keeping track on what youth on social media like Facebook, where videos or pictures of Burhan or other militants, are often shared. The results have been fast. In the past around a month alone, the police have succeeded to bring back over two dozen youth ,who were about to join militancy, back to national mainstream. Most of the youth hail from south Kashmir areas like Pulwama. "We had been keeping an eye on the activities of youth who would either share objectionable videos or would chat with such elements. And in doing so we ended up discovering that around two dozen youth from south Kashmir were about to join militancy had we not trapped them and put them to extensive counselling," said a senior official in the police department. He said most such youth wanted to join Hizbul Mujahideen, a hint that this militant outfit led by Syed Salah Ud Din was going stronger in Kashmir. Police said there were credible inputs that in Muzaffarabad, Hizb has put a dedicated team of "motivational speakers" on the task of running social media accounts to lure the youth towards arms. "Such specially trained group of militants are operating social media accounts where from they try to attract the attention of Kashmiri youth day and night," said the police official adding such activities have grown manifold in the past five to six months. He said the militants were trying to attract youth who have no history of having committed any unlawful activities. "The youth, whom we managed to get back from the militancy trap had no record of unlawful activities, not even stone pelting, which is too common in Kashmir," the official said. But if Hizb is trying to go dominant online, state police is one step ahead. In fact the police have taken lead by starting specialized cyber cell to counter the militant activities. "The J&K police are running a specialized cyber cell to track the online activities of these young men. And our teams work day and night to dissuade youth from joining the militant ranks," said a police official. He said another wing has been assigned the task of counselling of the youth. "The J&K police counselled these youths, mostly aged 14-17, through religious preaching," the official added. |
