Udhampur, Dec 22: Notwithstanding its tall claims over measures to curb the polythene menace in Udhampur , the concerned authorities virtually have failed to keep a proper check on as street in UDhampur are witnessing not only people carrying polythene but littered everywhere also. Resident of old Udhampur including Bharat Chowdhary, Amit Modi, Shaffiq Fardous, Salman Koser, Arjun Singh, Amit Tadeyal and others showing their concerns towards the environment and ecology said that use of polythene bags is rampant in the city despite the ban imposed by the state government. While talking to 'Early Times' they said, "The polythene bags are used across district Udhampur without any stoppage from concerned authorities." Mere a walk around main market of city its self reveals that hundreds of polythene bags being used by Bakery, Confectionery, Clothes, Shoes, vegetables, meat, toys and the use is still on shop. "Despite knowing the fact that these polythene bags are inimical to the environment, residents and shopkeepers are not willing to put a stop to it, they said, adding, "people and business community needs to look for alternate." They said as per experts the use of polythene bags is not only dangerous to the aquatic life in local water bodies including holy Devika and other Bowlies (traditional pucca ponds) for which the Udhampur is known but also is hazardous to human health. "The sewerage pipes get choked with polythene bags as they are non biodegradable and cause sewage to overflow, thus becoming an abode of many ailments, the activists said. "Besides this the stray cattle are often seen feeding on heaps of garbage dumped in polythene bags causing health hazards to domestic cattle, they added. They wanted government to take it seriously as it is a serious issue and should be dealt strictly. A shopkeeper not willing to be named justified use of polythene bags and said the customers don't bring their own bags and ask us for polythene bags. 'If we stop providing it, we lose our business adversely," he further added. When contacted, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Municipal Committee Udhampur K K Chalotra said that presently we are busy with National Food Security Act (NFSA) verification process by the order of DC Udhampur but we will be sending our inspection teams; to see that it (use of Polythene bags) is not done. |
