Early Times Report

BARAMULLA, Dec 22: It seems the parking space in Sub-district Hospital (SDH) Sopore has been sold out and those who have bought it for money are recovering the same from locals with impunity.
Managers of parking space inside Sub-district hospital, Sopore, issue tickets meant for patients against the parking of vehicles. The managers of parking space at Sub-District Hospital charges Rs 20 for parking a vehicle in the premises of the hospital but the irony is that hospital authorities instead of providing a proper receipt hand over hospital tickets to them that are meant for the patients.
Sources on anonymity told Early Times that, "The practice to issue hospital tickets instead of proper parking receipt continues from a long time and nobody knows that where this parking money goes. If the parking space would have been outsourced, the money will only go to Hospital Development Fund after giving proper receipts to drivers, said sources.
Sources said that state government is lacking of parking management program with the result commuters find it difficult to walk freely on roads. Local resident of Sopore Nisar Ahmad said that lack of accessible parking not only hurts local business but it also decrease quality of life for residents who live along the roadside near the market. Due to non-availability of car parking facility, there is congestion, accidental damages and environmental degradation, for which concerned authorities should be held responsible, said Ahmad. He said "No parking boards have been installed by the authorities across the town but the vehicles are still seen standing on the main roads creating chaos while the traffic police prefer to turn a blind eye towards the menace, which causes inconvenience to everyone.
A senior traffic police official said that, "according to the rules, the basements of all the commercial complexes should be used as parking slots but on the contrary, the basements are being used as commercial spaces in a number of complexes, which is another reason why vehicles are seen parked on the roads. Heavy parking charges, reduction of parking spaces and very strict restriction of parking or 'waiting' on roads or market places is absolutely essential if we want to control this menace, the official added.
