CWA meets Joint Commissioner commercial taxes | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 1: A delegation of Consumer Welfare Association (CWA) met Vinoo Malhotra, Joint Commissioner, Commercial Taxes, regarding the collection of VAT from consumers by some unscrupulous traders dealing in sale of both edibles and other normal items of daily use on which VAT is payable. According to press release, it stated that such traders sell their products not on proper printed bills but only on hand written small slips. Obviously, there being no record of total sales, the VAT collected from consumers is not paid to the Government. This is common with traders selling sweets, Namkeen, bakery items, viz Halwaiies and /confectioneries and others. An extensive check needs to be maintained on such traders by the department. The department should make it mandatory for the traders to issue printed detailed bills indicating the amount of VAT collected from the consumers. It was suggested by the delegation that VAT charged by the small retailers dealing with items on which VAT is chargeable be collected from them periodically in lump sum as was done by the authorities in case of Dhabas. For small retailers it will eliminate the need of maintaining cumbersome account of the VAT collected from the consumers. Joint Commissioner gave a patient hearing and admitted that some traders are indulging such unethical practice of not issuing proper printed bills. She advised that consumers should also insist on bills on their part. In respect of non-issuance of cash memo she gave spot instructions to the staff for immediate action against defaulters .With regard to collection of lump sum VAT from small retailers, on the lines of Dhabas, she assured to take up the issue with higher authorities. |
