Khanna, Nirmal call on Muftis’ at AIIMS | CM Mehbooba? | | ET Report Srinagar, Jan 1: The prospects of PDP president Mehbooba Mufti taking over as Chief Minister of the State took another big leap today as the coalition ally, Bharatiya Janta Party's top brass, including Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh today discussed the matter threadbare at a crucial meeting in the national capital. Sources said the Deputy Chief Minister flew to New Delhi on the instructions of the party leadership there who wanted him to call on the ailing Chief Minister who is hospitalized at AIIMS, and also to attend a crucial party meeting with regard to the change of the guard, expected anytime in the coming days. Sources said after a close-door meeting with the party top brass, senior BJP leader and member of Rajya Sabha, Avinash Rai Khanna and Nirmal Singh went for a courtesy call to Mufti and inquired about his health. Sources said Khanna, was deliberately made to accompany Nirmal Singh, only to clear the air that he was not against Mehbooba taking over as the Chief Minister and that BJP would support her takeover. At the hospital, sources said Khanna and Singh spent around half an hour with Mufti and his daughter who has been by father's side since he was rushed to AIIMS on December 24. The visiting duo is understood to have told Mufti Sayeed that "things will be fine and go on smoothly." Observers said Khanna's accompanying the Deputy Chief was a clear cut hint that BJP has no objections in Mehbooba taking over as the Chief Minister of State. This is because on November 15, 2015 Khanna had said there is no truth in "rumours" on the transition of power in the Peoples Democratic Party from father to his daughter. "There is no truth in the rumours that change of guard is on cards in Jammu and Kashmir. The coalition Government is running smoothly. No such meeting or communication has taken place between Mufti and the BJP high command," Khanna had said. The remarks had come a day after Mufti Mohammad Sayeed hinted at handing over power to Mehbooba Mufti amid rumours over his failing health. Talking to reporters in Jammu on November 14, Mufti had said Mehbooba is "mature" enough to take over the reins of the State. "She is president of PDP, works hard in the field, represents a constituency in Lok Sabha, became Member of State Assembly first time in 1996, so she deserves all this," he had said. |
