BANDIPORA, Jan 22: Breaches in the embankment of Jhelum River have caused devastation in Hajin area of this North Kashmir district. Both the power and water supply have been snapped to this area.
Locals allege that the government has failed to plug these breaches since the floods hit Kashmir valley in September 2014. Breaches in embankment in Banger and Sheikh Mohallas of Hajin area Friday morning forced the residents to shift to some safer places.
"The breach is still open. Nobody from the government has bothered to visit this place. There are three more breaches within a 2 km radius from where there are chances that water can enter into the villages," a group of villagers told Early Times. The locals said that various villages including Hajin, Hakhbroura, Paribal, Batgund, Madhvan and other adjoining areas can be affected due to the breaches. As of now the road passing through Hajin town caved in early morning today thus disrupting the vital connectivity in the area.
A patch of road around 100 meter of length breached at Banger Mohalla in Hajin area putting the surrounding area in danger. The road connecting Hajin with Bandipora and other areas passes on the right bank of river Jhelum, sources informed. After September 2014 floods there are many instances when the river Bund breached in Hajin area.
Residents said that a team of experts and officials has visited the area a couple of times to take stock of the situation but they have not done anything practical to protect the bund from breaches.
"Continuous breaching of flood embankments can cause a huge loss of life, properties and disruption of communication system, if it was not stopped by the concerned authorities," said locals. The locals held a protest demonstration against the administration after the breaches occurred.
"The district administration has not taken any step to repair the damaged bund and whenever there is a slight increase in water level in Jhelum River the water enters into the villages and puts us at risk. There should be a proper investigation of such breaches which is very essential to avoid any damage in future, and let the government decide what proper measures should be put in place," locals said.
