Early Times Report

Rajouri, Jan 22 : The Degree Colleges opened by the previous governments during the past ten years in Rajouri run from rented accommodation with the institution at Thannamandi being the only exception. The colleges were opened at Kalakote , Nowshera, Sunderbani, Thanamandi and Budhal. Besides proper accommodation, the successive governments have failed to provide proper staff to the colleges. The government has also failed to fill the sanctioned posts (permanent) of Assistant Professors and after several protests by the students at all these places some teachers were appointed on Academic Arrangements after several months of beginning of current academic session. Government Degree College at Kalakote was established in 2011 and since then the college administration has been conducting classes (art subjects) in 4 rooms of higher secondary school.
Prof Kuldeep Raj Sharma, Principal is only on permanent posting while against sanctioned 11 posts of Assistant Professors in English, Political Science, Sociology, Hindi Urdu, Economics, Education etc subjects 2 posts are lying vacant and remaining 9 have been working on Academic Arrangement .
"As the college has no building the students especially girls facing many difficulties in the absence of class rooms, toilet block etc" said a student.
At present, 164 students have taken admissions in various streams and facing difficulties in the smooth conduct of the classes. Even after a gap of more than 5 years district administration failed to identify the land for the construction of College building.
"Earlier the land was identified and the proposal was also sent but after some dispute raised by some locals the idea to acquire the land was abandoned. Recently the matter was raised in the meetings held by the Ministers. A committee was constituted which has identified land at three places," said Shair Ahmed Bhat, deputy commissioner.
He added that reports submitted by the committee has been forwarded to the Higher Education Authorities for their approval. He said that the money for the construction of the building has already been released and lying with the concerned authority.
" Higher education department has sanctioned 11 posts of Assistant Professors for this college and 9 teachers have been appointed on Academic Arrangement for various subjects while two posts are still vacant," said Kuldeep Raj Sharma, principal.
On the demand of poor people who can't afford higher education for their children at Rajouri or at other places in the State, the government had sanctioned the college at Kalakot.
But in the absence of infrastructure only 164 students got themselves enrolled in various subjects and those who want to pursue their studies in science subjects either have abandoned their dreams or have taken admission at Rajouri after making financial arrangements.
