| PREVAILING POLITICAL UNCERTAINTY | | | R.B. SURI
We are at the moment
passing the days in
political uncertainty as there is no popular government in the state after the death of Mufti Mohanmmed Sayeed on 7th January. Governor's Rule was clamped in the state on 8th January. For how long this reign of uncertainty will prevail in this sensitive state? Nobody knows but certainly this is matter of great concern for the state and all of us. The governance in the state of Jammu and Kashmir was under PDP and BJP combine set up since 1st March last year based on Agenda of Alliance devised by the two partners for the purpose of governance. Agenda of Alliance worked well leaving aside one or two instances of misunderstandings between the coalition partners. It started giving the dividends to the people of the state and the Coalition Government was stabilized very much. Mufti Mohammed built up strong relations with the central government as also personal friendship with Prime Minister Narender Modi.
Due to the controversies arisen in the very 1st month after taking over the reigns of the state on March 1 last year , he experienced the hard days in running the state government. Mufti Mohammed Sayeed after having remained under stress for a month or so in concentrating on the internal administrative set up of the government was able to think on sparing some of his time in motivating the people at the helm of affairs in the state set up besides inviting the Bollywood and the big Corporate houses to come to our state for making / shooting the movies and establishing their industrial units as there is a rich potential for the same. He made the hectic tours to New Delhi , Mumbai, Chennai and other prominent cities of the country and met personally with the top Producers and Directors as well as the big corporate houses of the country and got a very good and tremendous response from them in this regard . He also went on pleading for the good ties between India and Pakistan throughout his life and as the Chief Minister of the state.
He was of the strong view that all the barriers existing at the moment should be removed and let the people from both the regions of the state go freely without any man made restrictions . At the same time, Mehbooba Mufti resumed political activities after mourning the death of her beloved father and convened the meeting of the legislators of her party at Srinagar last week. The legislators of her party reposed their confidence in her and authorized her to take a call on the issue involved of the formation of the government in the state at the earliest possible.
With her coming into the political field once again after the death of her father, it was hoped that the political stalemate which is existing at the moment would come to an end. Pertinent to mention here that BJP through the former deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh has already given the clean chit to PDP that BJP has no objection at all in accepting Mehbooba as the Chief Minister of the state. It is worthwhile to mention here that earlier, understanding the need of the hour in the post election scenario of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, the leadership of PDP and BJP joined their hands together and succeeded in forming the coalition government in the state on March 1 last year . Since then the coalition government remained in existence and stabilized much till the death of Mufti on 7th January.
Now the state mourning is already over but still Mehbooba is keeping her cards secret and close to her chest. She must be analyzing the things in her own way. The political experts opined that she is double minded whether to continue with the Agenda of Alliance or not. She is making the indepth analysis of the past experience with coalition partner BJP. They further said that in the absence of an elected government, there was total chaos in the state. Earlier the impression was given in the media that Mehbooba Mufti would be assuming the Chief Ministership of this sensitive state immediately after the Fateh Ceremony of his father Mufti Mohammed Sayeed. But that has not happened. The Governor's Rule was imposed in the state of Jammu and Kashmir on 8th January. N.N. Vohra Governor J&K is in touch with the stake holders regarding the formation of next government in the state . The political opponents of the previous coalition partners i.e. INC and National Conference are under great suspense that as to why the President PDP Mehbooba Mufti is lingering on the issue involved which is of great importance for the state . If the things would not move fast and the present uncertainty continues to prevail, that would not be good for the state. Constitutionally, the Governor should act promptly on the issue involved after taking the legal opinion in the matter from the constitutional experts as the state cannot be left at the mercy of the coalition partners any more. |
