Will mid-term polls benefit or harm PDP? | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad
Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 5: With the political experts reading early polls into the decision of Governor N. N Vohra of appointing two advisors, a million dollar question remains as to whether the PDP would gain or lose if J&K goes for mid-term elections. The PDP president, Mehbooba Mufti, is seeking fresh confidence building measures from no less than the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on timely implementation of 'Agenda of the Alliance', a document agreed upon by two parties before forming a coalition government in state in March last year. Sources said that if the assurances don't come, Mehbooba will not hesitate in calling for fresh elections. Insiders in the PDP said that the party won't get 20 odd seats if it faces the polls at this crucial juncture. A senior PDP leader wished anonymity said that party chief is, however ready to deal with every challenge and situation and facing polls one of them is. "She told us that even if she gets only 15 seats, she won't mind and it would be better for PDP rather than seeing its Agenda of Alliance not being implemented," the PDP leader maintained. "We won't compromise for anything. It was observed that Agenda of Alliance was not being implemented the way late Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed wanted it to be. So Mehbooba ji took a stand and asked BJP to fall in line," he said. Sources said that the PDP lawmakers have assured Mehbooba of their full support in either situation - to go ahead for the mid-term polls or alliance with the BJP. While the situation in 2008 had resulted in a surge in PDP's seat share, it will be both the PDP as well as the BJP which will have to take a hit this time if fresh elections are conducted in the state. Political observers in Kashmir believe that the candid admission of PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti that her late father was not allowed to proceed for implementing the agenda of alliance and such situations were created unnecessarily is an enough hint that she wants the BJP to implement the agreement in total before holding the chair of J&K's woman Chief Minister. "What remains to be seen how far BJP would budge in this hour when it is desperate to stay in power," they said. Meanwhile Political observers believe that the BJP would also suffer more electorally in Jammu than the PDP will in Kashmir. One of the former BJP leader in Jammu, said the popularity of BJP in last ten months has witnessed a steep decline, not just because of the coalition's failure to deliver on governance but also because the leaders failed to remain in touch with people. |
