KUPWARA, Feb 20: Officials of the Forest department on Saturday seized five scants of Deodar here in Kupwara district of North Kashmir. According to sources, the Forest Division Kehmil seized 236fts of Deodar from the house of Mohammad Aslam Khan S/O Muhammad Sidiq Khan R/O Dedikote Kupwara. The accused had earlier sought permission to chop two scants from his own land but after officials granted him permission he felled five scants thereby was seized by the authorities, sources told Early Times. Meanwhile a senior police official said that, a case has been registered in police station Welgam vide FIR no 13/2016 under section 379/6/ forest act against the accused Mohammad Aslam Khan and his son Sabdar Ahmad Khan.
The accused have not been arrested so far, but we have launched a man hunt to arrest the culprits, the official said. Sources said timber smuggling goes unabated in various parts of Kupwara district and smugglers have dumped huge quantity of forest timber in Chokibal and its adjoining areas. Green forests are chopped off by timber smugglers in broad day light and due to callous attitude of forest department the smugglers are roaming freely, sources said. "It seems that the forest officials are hand in glove with timber smugglers. Smugglers chop these trees during day time and transport it in the night to the nearby areas of Kupwara district which is being supplied to other parts of the valley." These smugglers sell this illegal timber to band saw mills owners in low rates, after which needy people purchase the same timber on high rates, sources informed. Sources further said that, it is all because of sheer negligence and callous attitude of forest department who are in deep slumber and have given free hand to the timber smugglers in this frontier district. "As government is nowhere, so we appeal the governor of the state, N.N Vohra to take stern action against those who are being found in smuggling of green gold in and around our district," sources maintained.
