13 Bijbehara villages reel under darkness

Anantnag, Feb 20: As many as thirteen villages in Bijbehara assembly constituency of this southern district are reeling under darkness since from last one week as Power Development Department has failed to replace damaged transformer in a Receiving Station feeding the villages.
Official sources told Early Times that on last Thursday (11th of February) newly installed transformer having capacity of 6.3 MVA got damaged due to a technical fault and since then the department hasn't installed a new transformer in Dupatyar Receiving Station which feeds as many as thirteen villages of Bijbehara assembly segment including Kanelwan villages that ranks third position in terms of population in the constituency currently being represented by Peoples Democratic Party in legislative assembly. They said that villages including Dupatyar, Kanelwan, Chinigund, Banderpora, Sandpora, Aasowara, Karndigam, Takibal, Gantlipora, Hayar, Karndigam, Thajiwara and Chandpora are reeling under complete darkness. Residents have so far held several protest demos against the department but all in vain as the authorities haven't yet made the receiving station functional. Angry residents this morning also held protests against the department for failing to install the transformer on Friday as promised. They blocked Bijbehara-Pahalgam road and didn't allow vehicles to play on the road throughout the day resulting serve suffering to people particularly to tourists. Protesters raised slogans against Power Development Department and threatened to intensify protesters if department failed to install the transformer in Receiving station Dupatyar. Chief Engineer PDD and several other senior officials avoided repeated calls.
Meanwhile, Early Times has learnt from reliable sources that Raj Bhawan has took strong note of power crisis in Bijbehara and has directed the department to ensure restoration of power supply to these villages as soon as possible.
