Kashmir highway through despite rain, Leh, Mughal roads remain closed

Srinagar, Feb 20: The 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was the rough despite rain.However, the national highway, linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir and historic Mughal road remained closed since December last year due to accumulation of snow and there also fresh snowfall during the night.
A traffic police official said that traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu highway was through from both sides with some restrictions to avoid any traffic jam or accident.There was rain at most places on the highway, he said adding but the highway was through. However, he said the historic Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region remained closed since December last year due to accumulation of several feet of snow. There was fresh snowfall during the night at some places on the road, including Pir-ki-Gali, he added and said the road is expected to reopen in April. The Ladakh region remained cut off from Kashmir due to closure of the national highway. There is six or more feet of snow accumulated at several places, including Zojila, Zero point, India Gate and Meenmarg, official source said, adding that there was fresh snowfall during the intervening night. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintenance of the highway was expected to reopen the highway, early this year because of less snowfall.
