JAMMU, Feb 20: People today attacked the cavalcade of controversial Langate MLA, Er Rashid at Bhambla near here and caused damage to his Scorpio car, forcing him to retreat to Jammu. As the news spread that Rashid was to pass from Bhambla for his onward journey to Kalakote, a large number of locals gathered on the road at Bhambla. Eyewitnesses said seeing his cavalcade approaching Bhambla, people got agitated and started raising slogans against him. Joined by the activists of Bajrang Dal, Shiv Sena and VHP, the protesters later smashed his Scorpio. Their attempt to blacken the MLA's face, however, failed as the ink sprinkled by someone on his face blackened the face of ASI Uttam Singh and also fell on the uniform of SHO of Sunderbani police station. During the clash, VHP activist Pritam Sharma sustained a head injury and was shifted to GMCH, Jammu. MLA Ravinder Raina also reached the spot after some time and joined the protesters. He held Nowshera ASP Rakesh Kumar responsible for the today's situation. "Under the ASP, such an incident has occurred in the area for the fourth time," he said and demanded his immediate transfer. The protesters also burnt the effigy of MLA Rashid who later returned to Jammu. After he left, people blocked the road to vehicular traffic. However, following an assurance from the DIG concerned that a probe would be held into the incident, people dispersed peacefully. |
