Traffic diversion plan triggers protests in Srinagar | | | Javaid Naikoo
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 9: The traffic diversion plan carved-out by authorities to avoid risk to human lives in the areas where flyover is under construction has triggered protests in south city areas. Hundreds of vehicles remained stranded for hours in south city following a protest demonstration and blockade of roads in Solina and Rambagh markets by local business fraternity. Protestors had erected barricades in Solina Market and at Rambagh Bridge to stop movement of vehicles on the road to grab attention of District Administration Srinagar towards their woes. Business unit holders terming authorities move to divert traffic from Rambagh-Jahangir Chowk road as an ill planning said that by doing so concerned department has risked their livelihood as markets give deserted look in absence of hustle and bustle of Pedestrians. "We are here to protest against authorities, move to divert traffic from this road after citing an excuse of risk to human lives in areas where construction of flyover is going on, it is a politically motivated move and we are ready to go any extent to restore traffic movement on this road again."One protestor on Rambagh Bridge told Early Times that Police officials on the spot ruling out any political interference in the decision said that traffic from Rambagh-Jahangir Chowk road was diverted following apprehensions of risk to human lives because of ongoing work on fly over in Solina Bazar. Supporting strike of people from Solina and Rambagh Markets KTMF president Muhammad Yasin Khan demanded Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's intervention in the city traffic mess. He termed the traffic diversion as announced by the divisional administration a conspiracy to sabotage commercial activities ahead of business season in Kashmir. Khan while asking the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to personally look into the matter said that "the closure of vehicular movement on the Jehangir Chowk-Ram Bagh road and the traffic diversion plan as announced on the directives of Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, is not only reportedly politically motivated and half baked, but the diversion system will throw the commercial activities of the civil lines into chaos, at a time when the tourist season is about to start." "Despite being mandatory, the Divisional Commissioner didn't bother to call meeting with the Kashmir Inc, including tourism players, civil society, media fraternity and others concerned, before taking this decision, which will impact life in the civil lines for months to come," Khan said supporting the protest staged by the traders of Solina and Ram Bagh areas, Khan said the improper diversion will bring traffic movement to grinding halt across the summer capital and marketplaces in the civil lines including historic Lal Chowk, Regal Chowk, Polo View, Maisuma, Maharaja Bazar, HSHS, Batamaloo, Karan Nagar, Magarmal Bagh, Ram Bagh and other areas. |
