Students puncture Govt claims; stage sit-in, redraft demands | | | Early Times Report JAMMU/SRINAGAR, Apr 9: Despite Government making tall claims about defusing the tension in the NIT campus in Srinagar, the agitating outstation students continued their protest dharna on Saturday and redrafted their set of demands ahead of another round of deliberations with the officials of the HRD Ministry on Sunday. Earlier on Saturday, the main demand of the protesting students to shift NIT from Srinagar was categorically rejected by the HRD Ministry much to the discomfiture of outstation students. According to the Registrar, NIT, there was a demand that NIT should be shifted from Srinagar. "This cannot be agreed to as per Ministry of HRD." Meanwhile, responding to the concerns raised by the students about the conduct of the police officers involved in the brutal attack the Government has directed them to stay away from the campus till the time the inquiry committee submits its report to the State Govt. The students still remain adamant on taking strict action against the police officers for brutal attack on the NIT students. In his order No; NIT/R/16/122 Dated; 9-4-2016 Registrar stated that the students have brought their grievances in the notice of team of MHRD and the Chairman, Board of Governors, NIT Srinagar. In this context, following decisions have been taken by the competent authority: Girl students have complained that the timing of their movement to and fro hostels has been restrictive. They also complained about prevailing pass system, which is a hindrance for them. It has been decided that pass system be immediately removed. The timing of moving to and fro hostels should be relaxed. A detailed notice in this regard has been issued. There was a complaint that students need to obtain permission to celebrate festivals. The same has also been waived. Henceforth, there will not be any need for students to obtain permission from the administration. A notice in this regard has been issued. There are many issues, which have been raised, related to Mess, Cleanliness, Geyser, inadequately equipped Labs, Classes, rude behavior of staff and discrimination. The same will be placed in the meeting of Board of Governors, which is scheduled on April 11,2016, and time bound action will be taken under supervision of the Board. Ministry of HRD will also monitor the action taken report. Students, who want to address the Board are welcome. They can also submit their complaint in writing without indicating their name. As has been apprised earlier that those who want to go home may submit their details as per the notices which have been sent. NIT will help their transit. Another Minor Exams will be held in lieu of the Minor scheduled from April 11 to April 14,2016 for students at a convenient time. Students have expressed a fear that their grading will be adversely affected due to present situation. A student Grievance Redressal System has already been notified which will also address such issues on priority. The Registrar of NIT has once again requested students that they should keep calm and attend the academic activities. |
