SRINAGAR, Apr 9: At a time when the role of Jammu & Kashmir Police is under scanner for handling the situation at National Institute of Technology here, the stone pelting at the migrant colony at Haal in Pulwama in South Kashmir on Friday evening 'exposed' the claims of police higher ups that stern action would be taken against anti-national elements.
Reports said that 90 odd families putting up at this migrant colony are living under fear following the stone pelting incident. These people are yet to come out of the shock and they are quite disturbed over the incident that took place on Friday at about 6:30 PM.
Early Times has learnt from sources that the police personnel posted at the migrant colony acted as lame ducks and did not retaliate while the stone pelting was going on. The stone pelting that carried on for more than one and half hours led to 'terror' among the inhabitants of the migrant colony.
"The inhabitants especially women and children cried for help as the stones were being pelted on the colony. The colony suffered huge losses and the window panes were damaged in the stone pelting incident. This is despite the claims of administration that the incident was a minor one and no damages were suffered due to the stone pelting incident," said sources.
Sources said that had the police personnel acted in a professional manner without any fear the stone pelters would have not resorted to such intense stone pelting on the migrant colony. They said that the police personnel neither lobbed any smoke shell on the stone pelters nor did they fire any bullet in the air.
"This is not the first time that a migrant colony has been attacked by miscreants. Such incidents have taken place in the past as well, but the people at helm are not ready to learn any lesson from such incidents. If such things get repeated in the future then migration of the Kashmiri Pandits living here cannot be ruled out. This would also lead to the setback of the rehabilitation policy of the Kashmiri Pandits as framed by the State Government," said sources.
Meanwhile, a delegation of United Kashmiryat Forum (UKF) led by its chairman, Bharat Raina visited the migrant colony at Haal and interacted with the people putting up there. Raina condemned the incident and pulled up the local administration as well as police for their 'laxity' in dealing with the situation.
"It is quite possible that such incidents would lead to exodus of Kashmiri Pandits who are presently living in valley. The Station House Officer of the concerned police station should be transferred immediately since he acted in irresponsible manner in dealing with the situation. The local administration also failed to play its role in settling nerves of the people living in the colony and they too need to be pulled up," said Raina while talking to Early Times.
The UKF Chairman said that police should immediately arrest the people who resorted to stone pelting on the migrant colony. He demanded that the police unit posted at the colony should be replaced by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). He said that such incidents damage the secular fabric of Kashmir and wanted assurance from the Government these would not be repeated in future.
"The Government is talking a lot about the return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits, but the ground situation is different. In case any harm is caused to any Kashmiri Pandit the whole responsibility would lie on the State Government and police. Police is providing full security to separatists while as vulnerable people like Kashmiri Pandits are left at the mercy of God," said Raina.
