Elderly's death due to cardiac arrest during security check sparks protests in Verinag

Anantnag, Apr 9: Sudden death of a 55 year old man in Halmullah Gawas village of Kapran Verinag during intervening night sparked massive sporadic protests in Verinaag.
Locals of village took to streets on Saturday to protest the death of a 55 year old man, who according to them suffered cardiac arrest after army, raided his residence.
"Deceased identified as Abdul Gani Naik suffered heart attack, when troopers knocked door of his residence at around12:15am," locals said.
They alleged that soldiers reportedly carried out a raid on his house during late last night hours. "On this the aged person suffered a cardiac attack and immediately was taken to nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead, they added. "Residential houses of Abdul Gani Naik and Bashir Ahmad Thoker were raided by army at around 12 in the last night," Gulzar Ahmad, neighbor of deceased told media persons.He said that at around 1:30 AM, residents called SHO concerned who took custody of Naik's body around 1:30 AM.
As the news about his death spread in the area, villagers took to roads and held protests.
Hundreds of people took to streets and started marching towards Verinag; However police contingent foiled their bid and resorted to tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters. "Paramilitary forces were deployed in the area to keep the situation under control, witness said. However, army refuted the allegation, saying that they had launched a search operation in the area along with police and that the particular house was not being searched upon. Army Spokesman stated that under humanitarian approach the troopers after finding Abdul Ghani Naikoo unconscious during the operation immediately evacuated him to nearby Hospital where he failed to respond treatment and was declared dead.
