| People protest against I&FC deptt, block road | | |  MS Nazki

Poonch, Apr 9: Alleging that irrigation and flood control (I&FC) department had failed to take preventive measures in protecting their houses from the threat of floods, inhabitants of Chajjla in Mankote, Poonch, today held a protest against the department.
People gathered near Chajjla and staged an anti-I&FC demonstration for its failure to construct protection walls to save the houses of those whose lands were washed away in the flash floods in the past.
They shouted slogans against I&FC (Poonch), I&FC AEE (Mendhar), besides chief engineer. "The contractors tasked to raise protection walls were not taking their work seriously as no work is visible on the ground," said Abdul Qayoon Malik.
I&FC Executive Engineer, Poonch, Mustaq Ahmed could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
Sources, however, said Rs 6 lakh work for the construction of protection walls had been given to contractors.
On the assurance of Mankote tehsildar Shehzad Khan that the deputy commissioner would be apprised of their demands, the protesters dispersed peacefully.
