Valley goes without internet over Kupwara killings | | | Majid Nabi

Srinagar, Apr 14: Sensing trouble following fierce clashes in parts of valley over Handwara killings, authorities Thursday snapped internet service across Kashmir including summer capital Srinagar to "curb rumor mongering" and to restore normalcy. Official sources told 'Early Times' that the internet services were snapped first in North Kashmir, while in other parts of Kashmir the services were downgraded to maintain law and order and to prevent rumor mongering on social networking sites. Sources said that the decision to suspend internet services was taken in a security meet on Wednesday to prevent situation go out of control. "The suspension is a temporary measure and services would be restored as soon as the situation returns to normal". they said Pertinently four civilians including an aged lady got killed after security forces fired upon the mob protesting against the molestation of a local girl allegedly by an army personal in north Kashmir's Handwara town. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir range Syed Javaid Mujtaba Geelani, while confirming snapping of internet services said that the step was taken to maintain law and order and to prevent rumor mongering. "The suspension and downgrading of internet services across Kashmir valley has been done o curb rumor mongering, and prevent situation to go out of hand." IGP added. The IGP however assured that the internet services would soon be restored after authorities feel that situation is limping back to normalcy. "We are following the orders, we receive official communique on Wednesday evening to suspend internet services on temporary basis, services will be continue to suspend until we receive nod form the authorities concerned," an official in BSNL told 'Early Times'. Pertinently the mobile users complained of low connectivity or no connectivity in Srinagar and other areas of Kashmir division. They said in this jet age it has become difficult for them to remain cut off from the rest of the world. Many users in summer capital while sharing their experience with 'Early Times' complained of poor broadband services as well. They said that BSNL was not working since Wednesday morning. The service providers however remained tight-lipped about suspension of the mobile internet services across Kashmir Valley. |
