Govt to recheck material quality used in Ram Bagh flyover | To avert Kolkatta like incident | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report Srinagar, Apr 27 What could compel the skeletons to tumble out of the political cupboards is the much hyped Ram Bagh Jahangeer Chowk flyover which according to experts needs another round of thorough investigations for the material used in its construction. Sources said that the main reason behind shutting down the vehicular movement along the flyover was that the authorities are much apprehensive that the bridge could collapse as witnessed in Kolkatta last month in which several people lost their lives while scores were injured. Sources divulged that the government has passed strict restrictions that no vehicular movement shall be allowed near to the construction site of the flyover and the traffic had to be diverted even if it creates chaos across the summer capital. Reports indicate that the government has once again asked the quality control department of the Roads and Buildings to conduct through re-investigation of the flyover and check whether the material as per the specific and prescribed standards has been used. Sources said that in a high level meeting held in Srinagar recently, the concern has been expressed the quality of material used in the Jahangeer Chowk flyover construction and it was unanimously resolved that another round of quality assessment of the material has to be ensured. Sources informed that R&B's separate wing called Quliaty Control department has been assigned the task to check the quality of the material used for the flyover which passes through the most congested areas of the Srinagar city. As the work over its construction commenced during the regime of the former chief minister Omar Abdullah, the completion in the year 2016 continues to remain a distant dream. The findings of the monitoring committee states that it would take atleast a year from now on to make the flyover functional and open for the vehicular movement. The main quality tests that will be done to ascertain whether the material of a good quality has been used in the flyover construction include the Compressive Strength test of the concrete to know whether the flyover could tolerate the high weight of the vehicles. Other tests would be of the cement used in it and the overall bearing capacity of the structure. When contacted, the phone of the R&B Minister Abdul Rahman Veeri was picked by one of his secretaries who informed this reporter that 'Sahib' is talking to a deputation and cannot be disturbed now. The work on the project, pertinently, has been divided into 4 sections - A, B, C and D. Out of the 4 sections, the work on B and C sections (from Estates building to Sericulture crossing) is in full swing and work on A and D sections has also started. Approximately 280 shopkeepers are affected by the project. The effected shopkeepers and businessmen are being rehabilitated at newly constructed shopping complexes at Rambagh, Exhibition ground and in Estates Department building situated nearby. |
