BJP stands condemned, blacklisted after NIT row | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 27: Gone are the days when the nationalists and the Hindus used to look towards the BJP hoping that it would defend them, promote their interests and take on the anti-nationalist forces. As the today's BJP is not the BJP of Shyama Prasad Mookerjee and Deendayal Upadhaya, the nationalists have by and large distanced themselves from the BJP, saying to seek help from the BJP would be only a futile exercise, wastage of time and an attempt at self-deception. The point is that the BJP today stands condemned and blacklisted. It has fallen from grace and has lost the people's support. This can be seen from the prevailing distrust or mistrust between the BJP leadership and the common people in Jammu province, those who voted for it in 2014 also included. What has completely dented the image of the BJP is its hostile attitude towards the non-local students of NIT Srinagar, who left Kashmir in the second week of April as they found the environment not suitable for their safety sand security and studies. The BJP as a party and the BJP government have left them in the lurch and that's why they are fending for themselves and knocking at the doors of non-BJP leaders so that they could get justice. Till the other day, no one had expected that the hounded out and persecuted non-local students would ever meet the Congress leadership to seek its support to their genuine cause, but it happened. Many non-local NIT Srinagar students met with AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who assured them of his fullest possible support. "Met students and parents from National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar, who expressed concern over the safety and security of students on (the) campus. I assured them that the Congress would raise their concerns and put pressure on the government to resolve the matter," Rahul tweeted on Tuesday after the meeting. The NIT campus had been on boil following clashes between Kashmiri and non-Kashmiri students after the locals celebrated West Indies' win over the Indian cricket team in the world T-20 semi final match on March 31. The classes had to be suspended after the clashes and subsequent protests. A large section of non-Kashmiri students also refused to appear for their exams and sought migration from the institute and finally left the state's summer capital wholesale. It will be very interesting and significant if Rahul Gandhi stuck to the stand he took during his meeting with NIT students and their parents. For, the Congress is a known "secular" party and it has not taken up the cause of the nationalists for years now, more particularly after 1998, when Sonia Gandhi became AICC president. If Rahul Gandhi really does what he said, it would be a unique and rare intervention in the political history of the Congress post 1989. |
