588 FIRs registered in 2015 corresponding to 405 in 2014 | Drug mafia thriving in Jammu | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 27: The data of Jammu and Kashmir police (JKP) regarding registration of cases in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act indicated that there is sharp rise in the cases in the last year as compared to the preceding year. As per data available with Early Times, around 588 cases of NDPS Act were registered in 2015 against 405 registered in the year 2014, which shows that the smuggling of psychotropic substances has increased in the state. However, the conviction ratio in cases related to NDPS Act is very low, primarily owing to lack of evidence and failure of follow-up procedure by investigating agencies. As per data available, 588 cases were registered in the year 2015 and 221 were pending cases of NDPS act while 583 cases were charge sheeted by the police of which 11 cases were not admitted. "Previous under trial cases of NDPS cases were 2380 with addition of 583 cases sent for trail the figure reached to 2963 but the number of acquittals is 200 with only 28 convictions. Hostile witnesses, poor follow-up of recording statements and improper investigations are also the reasons behind the low rate of conviction apart from other factors. In majority of the cases, the accused are acquitted on technical grounds because the concerned officials do not follow a proper procedure during investigation. |
