Restrictions foil JKLF's prayer programme for Amanullah Khan | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Apr 27: Authorities imposed curfew like restrictions in Lal Chowk and adjoining areas here in order to foil the plan of separatist leaders to offer funeral prayers in absentia to Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) founder Amanullah Khan who passed away at Rawalpindi in Pakistan on Tuesday. Separatist leaders led by JKLF Chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik had asked the people to reach the Lal Chowk area today and take part in the funeral prayers for JKLF founder in the afternoon. However, the state administration enforced restrictions in the Lal Chowk and adjacent areas so that the funeral prayers in absentia are not offered. The police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel erected spools of concertina wire at many places in the summer capital so that the separatists and people don't assemble for the funeral prayers in absentia which was scheduled to be held after the noon prayers at 2 PM. The movement of people was restricted to a great extent in the areas which are commercially very important in the summer capital. Restrictions were severe in Maisuma, Budshah Chowk, Lal Chowk, Gaw Kadal, Koker Bazar, Court Road and Madina Market with people not being allowed to move around. Two important bridges Amira Kadal and Budshah Bridge were sealed by the police and CRPF personnel with nobody being allowed to cross them. Due to the enforcement of restrictions only pedestrian movement was noticed in areas where there was less impact of the stringent measures. Early in the morning, the JKLF Chairman was arrested by the police and lodged at Kothi Bagh police station. Chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was placed under house arrest at his residence in Nigeen. Chairman of his faction of Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani continues to be under house arrest at his residence at Hyderpora. In the afternoon, immediately after the noon prayers some of the JKLF leaders and activists led by Bashir Ahmad Bhat tried to march towards Lal Chowk and carry out the funeral prayers in absentia. However, police swung into action and arrested these people while bundling them in police vehicles. Besides Bashir, the other activists and leaders including Showkat Ahmed Bakshi, Noor Mohammad Kalwal, Sheikh Abdul Rashid, Bashir Ahmad Kashmiri, Bashir Boya, Professor Javed, Mohammad Hanif Dar, Mohammad Afzal Sheikh, Imtiaz Ahmed Ganai, Ali Mohammad Bhat, Nazir Hajam, Imtiaz Ahmad and Basharat Ahmad Dar were arrested. A spokesman of JKLF condemned the enforcement of restrictions and said that prior to the arrests police also raided JKLF office at AbiGuzar and arrested activist Irfan Ahmad Khan from there. He referred to the restrictions as equivalent to banning of funeral prayers in absentia for JKLF founder. Geelani also condemned the restrictions and termed it as infringement in the religious affairs of the Muslims of Kashmir valley. |
