GMC&H moots evening clinics again; Doctors threaten to quit | | | Nitesh Sangral Early Times Report jammu, May 10: The decision of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) Jammu to start evening clinics is likely to meet the same fate again because of the reluctance of most doctors against the initiative. Doctors of the GMC&H have been opposing the idea of evening clinics ever since the idea was mooted a couple of years ago to check and monitor the private practice by government doctors, which was banned by the state high court and also make the services of these doctors available to the Patients after the normal working hours. In a meeting held at the GMC&H on Tuesday, many doctors even threatened to quit their job if they were impelled to attend evening clinics. A group of doctors told Early Times that it is good initiative to start evening clinics in the government hospitals in view of patient care especially for those who visit from far flung areas. "Since the hospital timing has been changed, the patients who visiting from far flung area are failing to get attention of doctors as Out Patient Department (OPD) is closed by the time they reach, "they stated. Pertinently, state government had opened much hyped evening clinics in the premier hospitals in Jammu and Kashmir on May 1, 2013 to provide better health care facilities to poor and needy people but unfortunately the clinics had failed to function due to un-willingness of doctors to attend the evening clinics. "Astonishingly, there were only three doctors who had attended evening clinics established in GMC hospital here as there had not fixed schedule and doctors visited these clinics as per their convenience", sources said. Annoyed over decision of opening evening clinics, some faculty members wishing anonymity said that instead of easing the load on the hospitals, these clinics will add to the load and would create chaos. "The patients visiting GMC are giving long dates for certain tests and investigations due to heavy rush and paucity of equipments. There are no required and necessary equipments in the nursing home, "they stated and adding that it is not good for doctors' as well as patients as a doctor will be given less time to the patient and doctors will come under stress by giving double stress once in morning other at evening. |
