Army jawan slips to death during encounter at Kupwara | | | S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report KUPWARA, May 11: An army personal died after he fell into a gorge during an encounter with militants that started on Tuesday evening in the forest area of Watsar in Handwara tehsil of this North Kashmir district. A senior police official said that on specific information about the presence of militants in Bawan-Watsar area, on Tuesday late evening, a join team of Army and police's SOG wing cordoned off the whole area to prevent militants from escaping. "On Tuesday night security forces came into contact with a group of 2-3 militants in the area after which several warning shots were fired in air. The security forces noticed the movement of two to three militants after which the hiding militants opened a heavy volume of fire on security forces triggering off an encounter," the official said. One army jawan died in the encounter after he fell into a gorge. He has been identified as Omveer Singh. The jawan was removed to hospital after sustaining serious injuries. He was declared brought dead at hospital, the official said. The intense search operation was going on in the area, till the reports last came in. Meanwhile, sources said that army has closed all the exit points which lead to the area, so that militants could not escape from the site of operation. Srinagar based defence spokesperson Col. N N Joshi said that a jawan died after he fell into a gorge at the encounter site. Pertinently on May 6, one army jawan was killed in an encounter near Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector of this district. Army had foiled an infiltration bid in which one army jawan Ramesh Chand Yadav of Rajasthan was initially injured who had later on succumbed on way to the hospital. |
