Pawan questions Guv’s address, exposes BJP | Batting for nation | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 30: The budget session of J&K assembly commenced on May 25. Ever since then, the NC and other Kashmiri lawmakers have been raising emotive and divisive issues and the clueless, rudderless, leadership, "ideologically corrupt and politically bankrupt" BJP has been behaving as if its only role in the legislature is to watch the anti-India, anti-minority and anti-Army tirades as a mute spectator. Significantly, there is one lawmaker from Jammu, an independent MLA from Udhampur Pawan Gupta, who has taken upon himself the responsibility of playing the role of opposition in the 89-member House. He is the only one who has touched upon the most controversial points as contained in the Governor's address to the joint session of the state legislature. He has - apart from taking up Jammu-specific issues and questioning the financial administration - questioned the governor's address on four counts. He has objected to the inclusion of word Pakistan in the Governor's address and said what had the Governor's address to do with an issue which didn't fall within the domain of the state government. Foreign affairs are the concern of the Ministry of External affairs and it is for it to manage foreign policy vis-a-vis Pakistan. He did make a valid point. J&K has no role to play in matters which are within the domain of the External Affairs Ministry. Besides, he objected to the words "sub-continental peace" and "reconciliation". He demanded an explanation from the government as to what exactly it meant by "sub-continental peace" and "reconciliation". He said India was a sovereign country and it was for it to take effective steps which could not only promote its geo-political and economic interests but also to act in manner that deters its neighbours from disturbing peace in the region. He warned the state government to not go beyond the constitutional confines and discharge its duties it was required by the Indian Constitution and the J&K Constitution. As for the inclusion of the word "reconciliation" in the Governor's address, Pawan asked: "Reconciliation with whom"? "It can't be with Pakistan," he said, adding that "the word reconciliation is controversial" and it should not have find place in the address. Again, Pawan hit the nail on the head. Indeed, the reconciliation formulation is misleading. It creates an impression that there are certain issues which still remains unaddressed as far as the political status of J&K vis-a-vis New Delhi is concerned. Independent MLA from Udhampur also didn't spare the Governor and the BJP. He asked: Where was the need to talk about special status or Article 370 in the Governor's address. He said the "BJP, which fought against the state's special status for almost 65 years, has taken a complete U-turn on the issue for the sake of power" and that it stood thoroughly exposed. The point is that Pawan Gupta raised very fundamental issues in the Assembly. The manner in which he has started acting does give a ray of hope. His only refrain is that "he is one VS all Kashmiri lawmakers in the Assembly". |
