Forests on fire in Sunderbani, officials unmoved | | | Raj Sandeep
Early Times Report
Jammu, May 30: Forests considered to be a widely acknowledged source of maintaining environment and fighting pollution have become a victim of departmental lethargy. The sources informed Early Times that devastating fire has engulfed rural areas of villages Gura Charla, Rah Salyote and adjoining area in Sunderbani involving large forest area which is causing great danger to wild and other animals and destruction to trees besides creating suffocating atmosphere all around. While talking to Early Times correspondent, Raman Singh, a local of the area told that few officials of the level of guards are seen making frantic efforts with no support of any line department or fire fighting equipments to extinguish the fire. Raising fingers on the casual approach of Forest department to handle forest fires, Jagdish Kumar of the area told that most of area in J&K state is hilly surrounded with forests and is huge revenue generating sources of the State , but the State Forest department has failed to devise and put in place a well equipped mechanism at the disposal of the department which can help forest employees swing into action to nip the evil in the bud so as to prevent it from flaring up further till fire fighting arrangements are made through Fire and Emergency department. The sources told that pathetic approach of the Forest Department has been instrumental for huge losses to forest and whoever came leisurely to head the state department, he took the department casually to make less and mar it more and besides other loopholes, repeated fire incidents of fire have contributed tremendously to financial losses to the department. |
