Overloading, overcharging in passenger vehicles unabated | | | S Tahir-ul Haq
Early Times Report
BANDIPORA, May 30: Overloading in public transport has become a daily routine in Kashmir valley particularly in rural areas of north Kashmir where traffic department is hardly seen to check this menace. Traffic department has failed to check the overloading of buses and other vehicles which leads to fatal accidents in the district. The concerned department is in deep slumber that has allowed them to ferry passengers thus putting the lives of hundreds of passengers at risk. Residents of Bandipora district telephoned to early times and said that, "overloading of Tata buses in various villages of the district including Sumbal Sonawari, Hajin, Naidkhai, Baniyari, Safapora and other adjoining areas has become a point of concern for commuters and daily passengers. Nisar Ahmad of Sumbal said that, "Less attention is being given on monitoring overloaded vehicles, while as fact of the matter is greatest damage to the pavement is caused by overloading. There is an indifferent attitude of Traffic Police towards keeping a check on traffic defaulters which has encouraged the transport operators who are plying passenger vehicles on national highways to indulge in overloading causing inconvenience to general public and becomes a cause for fatal mishaps, said Nisar. Shafqat Ahmad, a student said that many times in recent past we made complaints to transport authorities for overloading and overcharging from the bus operators but no action has been taken yet. If we are not wrong it shows that, traffic police personnel are more interested in illegal business as entry points are nothing but to mint the money rather than controlling the menace of overloading, said a group of students. They said that, over loading have became routine in these mini buses on several routes especially on Bandipora roads and people in general are suffering as they are facing the innumerous problems every day. Drivers are playing with the lives of passenger's which is one of the main causes of accident in this district and the concerned authorities are in a deep slumber, students added. Irony of the fact is that traffic department looks in deep sleep passengers continuously face to trouble in all the districts of north Kashmir, and one fails to understand why the concerned department is not taking any action against the youths who are doing bike stunt on roads which is also creating a problem for the general public, said passengers.
