Members resent corruption, irregularities in Sports Council | Would CM continue with tainted Secretary? | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 27: An eminent member of the State Sports Council has expressed his anguish and resentment against the corruption and irregularities going on in the State Sports Council and written to the president of the Council Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and vice president, the Sports Minister Imran Raza Ansari, to directly intervene to put an end to shady deals going on in the sports body. The said member, who is a noted journalist besides being an athlete of substantial standing today expressed his displeasure at the manner in which secretary Sports Council Jawaid Ahmad Shah had been extending undue patronage to the unrecognized sports associations at the cost of genuine ones to extend illegitimate and undue benefits to blue eyed. "He walked out from the meeting of the scrutiny committee of the Council which was held today, leveling these allegations" informed a source in the Council. "The member later wrote to the CM and the Sports Minister, threatening to resign if mal- practices were not stopped immediately" he added. Similar allegation against the secretary Sports Council were raised by members in Jammu, where they alleged complete disregard of norms in purchases and ongoing civil works in Jammu. "In Jammu also, a noted member who has been on all important committees had raised his voice against flouting of codal formalities in purchases and tendering process and had refused to even sign the concerned documents, besides raising his voice against the refreshment mafia in which certain tainted officers who enjoy patronage of the secretary were eating into the refreshment being given to the sportspersons" said an official of the Council, pleading anonymity. Sources divulge that the Sports Minister had himself expressed his displeasure against the working of the secretary and sought his replacement from the Chief Minister, but just as the government had zeroed in on the name of a prominent technocrat to take over the headship of the Council, the incumbent secretary used his proximity with the first political family to cling on to the chair. It is pertinent to mention here that the state vigilance commission had directed the state government to take stringent action against Jawaid Ahmad Shah, who during his posting as additional resident commissioner in Mumbai had fraudulently withdrawn house rent from state exchequer running into lakhs even as he was residing in government accommodation. "While Chief Minister is reiterating clean administration, it is a pity that a tainted officer is not only being allowed to continue as secretary, but is also being given lose rope despite serious concerns raised by the members of the sports Council" the official said. |
