An Indian UN statement that rattles Islamabad | Kashmir and 'Black day in Pak' | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jul 15: Pakistan Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif today chaired a special Cabinet meet. Kashmir was on its agenda. The meeting was called in the wake of the strongest ever statement made by any Indian representative in the United Nations on Kashmir - a statement that rattled Pakistan. Sharif talked about Kashmir and the prevailing situation in the Valley in the wake of the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani, whom he hailed as "fighter for freedom" and "martyr". The cabinet, as was expected, sung the same song: alleged human rights violations in Kashmir; will continue to extend moral, material and diplomatic support to Kashmiri freedom fighters; and will continue to do so till Kashmiri Muslims were not given the right to self-determination. But more than that, the Cabinet decided to hold joint session of Parliament to discuss Kashmir and observe black day on Tuesday throughout Pakistan. As said, India on Wednesday made the strongest ever statement in the United Nations, which was a befitting reply to Pakistan's envoy in US, Maleeha Lodhi, who sought to misuse the world body by raking up anti-India issues. In her statement, Lodhi, apart from raising the Kashmir issue, mentioned the "extra-judicial" killing of Wani, whom she described as a "Kashmiri leader", by Indian forces. The task was performed by the Indian representative in the United Nations, Syed Akbruddin. Strongly hitting back at Pakistan for raising in the UN the issue of the killing of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani, he said Pakistan "extols" the "virtues" of terrorists and uses terrorism as a state policy towards the "misguided end" of coveting the territory of others. Countering the Pakistani senseless accusations, Indian representative said: "Regrettably, earlier today we have seen an attempt at misuse of this UN platform. The attempt came from Pakistan; a country that covets the territory of others; a country that uses terrorism as state policy towards that misguided end; a country that extols the virtues of terrorists and that provides sanctuary to UN-designated terrorists; and a country that masquerades its efforts as support for human rights and self determination. Pakistan, is the same country whose track record has failed to convince the international community to gain membership of the Human Rights Council in this very Session of the UNGA. The international community has long seen through such designs. Cynical attempts, like the one this morning therefore, find no resonance in this forum or elsewhere in the United Nations". Akbaruddin asserted that as a diverse, pluralistic and tolerant society, India's commitment to the rule of law, democracy and human rights is enshrined in its founding principles and India remain strongly committed to the promotion and protection of all human rights for all through pursuit of dialogue and cooperation. Indeed, what the Indian representative said at the United Nations was a scathing attack on Pakistan. Earlier, United States had snubbed Pakistan by saying the Jammu and Kashmir was India internal matter, which showed Pakistan's isolation in the international community, leave aside a few Muslim countries which to an extent share the Pakistani view on Jammu and Kashmir. |
