Early Times Report SRINAGAR/Anantnag, July 15: With three more persons, including a policeman, getting killed today and an injured person succumbing to his injuries in a hospital here, the toll in the week long violence in Kashmir mounted to 42. A civilian (protester) and a policeman were killed after suspected militants attacked Police station Yaripora in Kulgam district today evening while six cops received injuries in this suspected militant attack. Police sources said that suspected militants hurled a grenade towards police station Yaripora and instantly fired with AK-47 rifles . "Militants hiding in a mob injured seven cops among which one cop succumbed to injuries," sources said. The identity of slain policeman couldn't be ascertained till the last report poured in. Reports said that one protester identified as Sayar Ahmad Kumar resident of Chetragam Shopian also died in the militant attack. "Sayar Ahmad Kumar resident of Chetragam Shopian was reportedly brought dead in the nearby hospital after receiving a bullet injury," Medical Superintendent confirmed to Early Times. However, he said, no injured policeman was brought to the hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, local reports maintained ironically the mob didn't allow ambulances to carry the injured policemen to hospital. "Mob didn't allow ambulances to carry the injured the cops to hospital, they (protesters) damaged the ambulances as well," they said, adding, "Apprehending trouble, the administration then airlifted injured cops to Srinagar for specialized treatment." Reports also added that soon after the death of 18 years old Saryar Ahmad, agitated mob went on rampage and set Tehsil and Municipal committee office ablaze. "Situation in the area is tense and people mostly masked youth were protesting against the killing of youth till last reports came in, sources said. Two youth sustained pellet injuries in Anantnag's Sherpora area when they were protesting and pelting stones on security forces post after Friday prayers in Janglat Mandi area of the town. Meanwhile reports of clashes between youth and security forces were also reported from several areas of Anantnag including Dooru-Verinag, Levidoora, Meerbazar, Behibagh, Wazur Qazigund, and Kokernag Hangalgund. Reports said that a youth was killed after police and security forces opened fire on the protesters in Drugmulla area of North Kashmir's Kupwara district who were protesting against civilian killings in Kashmir. The youth was identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Ganie son of Mohammad Ahsan Ganie. Reports said that a youth who was injured a few days ago at Tengpora in outskirts of Srinagar city succumbed to his injuries today at Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura. He has been identified as Hilal Ahmad Parray. A police spokesman said that the overall situation throughout the valley remained under control today, though from many places incidents of stone pelting and attacks on security force establishments were reported. The spokesman said that at many places the militants mingled with protesters and attacked Police and CRPF personnel deployed for law and order duties. "In one such incident at Yaripora-Kulgam the militants lobbed grenades and fired indiscriminately on police party which was dealing with violent protesters. Seven police personnel and three civilians received gunshot and splinter injuries. One civilian died in militant firing. The police party exercised maximum restraint and did not retaliate to avoid civilian causalities. The seven injured policemen have been hospitalised among whom one Constable Mudasir Ahmed Shah is critical," said the police spokesman. The spokesman in another such incident the militants lobbed grenades on police and CRPF party which was dealing with violent protesters at Natnusa, Kupwara. Seven security personnel received splinter injuries and have been hospitalized. In another incident militants fired on police personnel of police station Lolab deployed for law and order duties, resulting in injuries to two policemen. "At Drugmulla-Kupwara an unruly mob attacked an army camp. In tackling the mob three persons were injured one of them succumbed to his injuries. Near Khaitangan, Baramulla a violent mob attacked an army party and tried to snatch the weapon. Two persons got injured in this incident," said the spokesman. The spokesman said that during incidents of stone pelting at various places in Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Shopian, Kulgam and Pulwama districts a number of security force personnel and civilians sustained injuries. In the meantime, barring Kupwara and Bandipora districts the entire Kashmir valley was put under curfew by the state government. Strict curfew was imposed in all the areas of Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam and Baramulla districts. Normal life continues to remain paralyzed across Kashmir due to the enforcement of restrictions and strike call given by the separatists. |
